Kitulgala, a small town on the Kelani River in Sri Lanka’s Sabaragamuwa Province, is the primary centre for white-water rafting in the country. The Kelani River through this section runs fast and clear over a series of rapids graded III to IV (on a scale of six), producing a two- to three-hour rafting run covering approximately 8 kilometres with up to 10 significant rapids. The surrounding Kelani Valley Forest Reserve is a protected area of dense wet-zone rainforest that served as the filming location for the 1957 film The Bridge on the River Kwai.
White-water rafting at Kitulgala is operated by licensed adventure sports companies. All participants receive life jackets, helmets, and paddles, with a safety briefing and swimming test conducted before entry to the river. Beyond rafting, the Kitulgala area offers canyoning â a descent of river gorges involving abseiling and swimming through natural water channels â as well as river swimming at natural rock pools and bird watching in the adjacent reserve, which supports a dense community of wet-zone endemic species including the Ceylon frogmouth and Sri Lanka spurfowl.
