The Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, established in 1889 during the British colonial period, is one of the oldest golf clubs in Asia and Sri Lanka’s most prestigious course. Set at approximately 1,850 metres above sea level in the centre of Nuwara Eliya â a hill town whose Victorian-era architecture, rose gardens, and temperate climate earned it the colonial-era nickname ‘Little England’ â the course is integrated into the town’s layout, with fairways running between colonial bungalows, a racecourse, and wooded hillsides.
The 18-hole parkland course measures approximately 5,400 metres from the back tees, with bermuda grass fairways and kikuyu rough. At this altitude, reduced air pressure means golf balls carry somewhat farther than at sea level, and the frequent afternoon cloud and mist make course management different from lowland playing conditions. Green fees and equipment rental are available to visiting players. The club’s historic clubhouse retains considerable colonial character. The Nuwara Eliya racing season, held in April, is the most active period in the town’s social calendar.
