Nuwara Eliya, at 1,868 metres in the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country, is the centre of the island’s highest-grown tea production. Teas grown above 1,200 metres altitude are classified as high-grown Ceylon teas and are internationally prized for their light colour, delicate flavour, and floral aroma. The combination of high altitude, cool temperatures averaging 16°C, and low humidity creates the distinctive character of Nuwara Eliya’s tea â often described as some of the most refined in the world. Estates in the region include some of the oldest in Sri Lanka, with tea bushes over a century old.
A tea ceremony experience in Nuwara Eliya introduces guests to the sensory appreciation of single-estate Ceylon tea through structured tasting. Unlike the formalised tea ceremony traditions of Japan or China, the Sri Lankan experience focuses on the visual inspection of the dry leaf, the colour and clarity of the infusion, and the evolving aroma and flavour as the tea cools in the cup. Many of the colonial-era estate bungalows in Nuwara Eliya â now operating as heritage hotels â offer guided tastings on their original verandas overlooking the plantations, often with traditional Sri Lankan short eats as accompaniment.
