Ella is a small hill town in the Badulla District of Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, set at approximately 1,000 metres above sea level in a gap in the central hill range. The town is surrounded by tea plantations, forested ridges, and rocky peaks including Little Adam’s Peak (1,141 m) and Ella Rock (1,041 m), both reachable via marked trails from the town centre. The cool climate, open landscape, and relative tranquillity have made Ella a popular base for wellness travellers, trekkers, and visitors arriving on the famous hill country train.
Yoga retreats in Ella typically offer daily Hatha or Vinyasa practice sessions in open-air studios or covered pavilions with views across the surrounding valleys and tea gardens. Programmes generally incorporate morning yoga, meditation, pranayama (breathing exercises), and guided nature walks alongside the core sessions. The high-altitude setting, clean air, and natural surroundings support the contemplative quality associated with yoga practice. Ella is accessible directly by rail on the scenic KandyâBadulla line, and the Nine Arches Bridge near Demodara â a few minutes’ walk from the station â is one of the most visited landmarks in the hill country.
