The wetland and river systems in the area around Galle include calm tidal channels, mangrove waterways, and lake sections suitable for non-motorised water activities. Dedduwa Lake, a few kilometres north of Galle, and the network of mangrove channels connecting it to the surrounding river system provide quiet, sheltered water through a landscape of cinnamon and rubber cultivation, traditional fishing settlements, and dense waterside vegetation.

A bamboo raft tour involves travel by traditional pole-steered bamboo platform through these channels, taking between 1.5 and 3 hours on the water. The silent, low-profile craft allows close approach to waterbirds — kingfishers, egrets, and herons are common sightings — and the narrow mangrove channels form tree-canopied tunnels in places. Along the route, cinnamon gardens provide context for the agricultural heritage of the Galle hinterland, which has been a cinnamon-producing region since at least the Portuguese colonial era. Monitor lizards, river terrapins, and occasionally otters may be encountered on calmer stretches.
