Mirissa Beach, on Sri Lanka’s south coast, developed from a fishing village into a popular resort area from the early 2000s. Fishing boats continue to operate from the beach, and the daily catch — landed in the early morning — supplies the town’s seafood-focused restaurants with direct-off-the-boat freshness. Common catches include yellowfin and skipjack tuna, seer fish (wahoo), barracuda, mahi-mahi, cuttlefish, tiger prawns, and lobster during the season.

Beachside seafood restaurants at Mirissa typically set tables directly on the sand or on terraces with open views across the bay. Menus reflect the catch of the day, with grilled tuna steak, garlic butter prawns, grilled cuttlefish, and whole reef fish among standard offerings alongside Sri Lankan rice and curry preparations. The combination of fresh seafood purchased directly from the harbour and the relaxed ambience of eating on the beach makes this a signature food experience on Sri Lanka’s south coast. The best availability is during the November-to-April dry season when the sea is calm and the fishing catch is most varied.
