Yala Wild Safaris operates licensed jeep safaris within Yala National Park’s Block 1, on Sri Lanka’s south-eastern coast. Yala is the most visited national park in Sri Lanka and is internationally known for its exceptional leopard density â a 2015 study estimated 35â50 leopards within Block 1 alone, equating to one of the highest concentrations of leopards per square kilometre of any protected area on Earth. The park’s combination of rocky outcrops, dense thornbush, and open water sources creates ideal conditions for leopard activity.
Safari vehicles are open-sided 4Ã4 jeeps traversing the park’s licensed track network. Morning safaris (from approximately 6 a.m.) and afternoon safaris (from 2 p.m.) coincide with peak wildlife activity. Alongside leopards, Yala supports Asian elephants, sloth bears, mugger crocodiles, water buffalo, and spotted deer. The park’s lagoon and wetland sections attract significant migratory waterbirds from October to March, adding a birdwatching dimension to the safari experience.
