Yala National Park, in the south-east corner of Sri Lanka, is the most visited national park in the country and one of the most biologically significant. Block 1 — the main zone open to tourist vehicles — covers approximately 141 square kilometres of coastal dry zone habitat: a mosaic of scrub jungle, open grassland, seasonal wetlands, coastal lagoons, and sandy beaches. The park is internationally recognised for its high density of Sri Lankan leopards (Panthera pardus kotiya), with an estimated 35–50 individuals in Block 1, making it one of the highest leopard concentrations per unit area recorded anywhere in the world.

Yala Kings Safari operates licensed jeep tours into Block 1, departing at approximately 6 a.m. (morning) and 2 p.m. (afternoon) — the periods of peak wildlife activity. In addition to leopards, visitors commonly encounter Asian elephants, Sri Lankan sloth bears, mugger crocodiles, spotted deer, water buffalo, and a rich birdlife that includes six of Sri Lanka’s eleven endemic bird species. The park also supports large populations of grey langurs, jackals, and over 215 recorded bird species in total.
