Ulpotha is unlike almost anything else in Sri Lanka — or indeed in Asia. This legendary eco-retreat is located in the rural North Western Province, surrounded by rice paddies, jungle, and a vast ancient tank reservoir that has sustained the surrounding village for centuries. There are no televisions, no Wi-Fi, and no air conditioning here; instead, guests inhabit traditional mud-brick huts built in the old Sinhalese style, cooled by breeze and shaded by ancient trees.
The retreat operates for two seasons each year and is built around immersive wellness and yoga programmes led by internationally acclaimed teachers. Days unfold at a pace determined by nature: early morning yoga, Ayurvedic treatments beside the tank, slow walks through the village, and evenings lit by oil lamps. Meals are prepared with ingredients grown entirely on the property.
