Trincomalee, on Sri Lanka’s north-east coast, is home to one of the finest natural deepwater harbours in the world, strategic in importance since ancient times and of critical military significance during the Second World War. The town’s coastline includes some of the most pristine beaches in Sri Lanka: Nilaveli and Uppuveli, north of the town, are long sandy beaches on the western shore of the Bay of Bengal with clear water and calm conditions from approximately April to September, suited to swimming, snorkelling, and diving.
Fort Frederick, built by the Portuguese in 1624 and subsequently held by the Dutch and British, occupies a rocky headland at the tip of the Trincomalee promontory. Within the fort stands the Koneswaram Temple â one of the five ancient Pancha Ishwarams of Sri Lanka â which was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1624 and rebuilt following the recovery of the original idol from the sea. Pigeon Island National Park, located 1 kilometre off Nilaveli beach, protects one of the best-preserved coral reef systems in Sri Lanka, with high visibility and diverse marine life including blacktip reef sharks, sea turtles, and large schools of reef fish.
