Sigiriya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka’s Matale District, is a 5th-century rock fortress built atop a volcanic plug rising 200 metres above the surrounding jungle. King Kashyapa I constructed the complex between 477 and 495 CE as his royal palace and fortress. The site is renowned for its sophisticated hydraulic engineering: the water gardens at the base of the rock feature a pressurised fountain system that remains partially functional today — one of the oldest landscaped gardens in the world.

A guided tour covers the water gardens, the boulder garden, and the famous fresco gallery — a series of 5th-century paintings of celestial maidens (Apsaras) rendered in natural pigments on a sheltered rock face. The Mirror Wall above the gallery was once polished to a reflective finish and is inscribed with Sigiri Graffiti, some of the oldest poetry composed in Sinhalese. The Lion’s Gate, where two massive lion paws carved from brick flank the stairway, leads to the summit plateau of approximately 1.6 hectares, where the ruins of the royal palace offer panoramic views across the surrounding forest.
