Polonnaruwa was the capital of Sri Lanka’s greatest medieval kingdom, and the ruins that survive today constitute one of Asia’s most impressive archaeological landscapes — a UNESCO World Heritage Site spread across several square kilometres of manicured parkland and forest that is best explored by bicycle. The flat terrain and shaded roads between monuments make it an ideal cycling destination, and the unhurried pace a bicycle affords lets you stop and absorb each site at leisure.
The key monuments include the Royal Palace complex of King Parakramabahu the Great, with its towering throne hall still standing to impressive height; the circular Vatadage relic house with its exquisitely carved moonstone entrance; the vast Rankoth Vehera dagoba; and the Gal Vihara rock temple, where four enormous Buddha figures carved from a single granite face — including a 14-metre reclining Buddha — rank among the finest sculptures in Asia. Bicycle hire is available throughout Polonnaruwa town, and guided tours add historical context that transforms a pleasant ride into a genuinely educational experience.
