The Kandy region’s network of secondary roads, rural tracks, and forest paths through a varied landscape of tea and rubber smallholdings, paddy fields, spice gardens, and village settlements makes it a well-suited area for mountain biking. Terrain around Kandy is consistently hilly â with climbs and descents of 100 to 300 metres being common on typical circuits â and rural roads carry relatively light vehicle traffic outside the main highway network.
Mountain biking tours from Kandy typically follow routes through the communities surrounding the city, including circuits past Udawatta Kele Sanctuary (the royal forest reserve immediately adjacent to the town), through the spice-farming villages of the Matale District, or along ridgelines above the Mahaweli River valley. The Knuckles Mountain Range â a UNESCO World Heritage Site â lies approximately 40 kilometres north-east of Kandy and offers more demanding off-road riding for experienced cyclists. Guided tours provide bicycles, helmets, and support transport for longer itineraries.
