In the shallow waters of the Palk Strait off Sri Lanka’s northwestern Kalpitiya Peninsula, something remarkable happens with extraordinary regularity: superpods of spinner dolphins — sometimes numbering in the thousands — gather in formations that cover the sea in every direction as far as the eye can see. This is one of Asia’s most spectacular cetacean experiences, set against the backdrop of a remote, undeveloped coastline that feels entirely removed from the tourist circuit.
Early morning boat trips from Kalpitiya head out into the strait where dolphins are reliably encountered leaping, spinning, and surfing the bow wave in exuberant displays. The pods encountered here are among the largest recorded anywhere in the Indian Ocean region. From November through March, blue whales are also present in the deeper offshore waters, and lucky visitors sometimes encounter them during the same excursion. The Kalpitiya area is also a world-class kitesurfing destination, and combining dolphin watching with a kitesurfing lesson makes for one of Sri Lanka’s best adventure weekends.
