There are few views of the Sri Lankan Cultural Triangle more breathtaking than the one you get from a hot air balloon drifting silently above the jungle as the sun rises behind Sigiriya Rock. The ancient rock fortress — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that rises 200 metres above the surrounding plains — is one of the world’s great heritage landmarks, and seeing it from the air, surrounded by a landscape of forest, reservoirs, and ancient civilisations, is an experience that stays with you for life.

Balloon flights depart at dawn from the grounds of a luxury hotel in the Sigiriya or Habarana area, rising with the warming air to an altitude of around 500 metres. The 45-minute to one-hour flight covers the Cultural Triangle landscape, passing over Sigiriya Rock, the Minneriya Reservoir, and the domed rooftops of ancient dagobas just visible above the treeline. Flights are conducted by internationally certified pilots and are subject to weather conditions. A champagne breakfast is typically served on landing.
