Colombo is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka and the largest city on the island, situated on the west coast where the island’s first European trading posts were established. The city’s layout reflects its layered colonial history: the Fort district at the northern end contains the former British administrative and commercial quarter, while the adjacent Pettah is a dense, centuries-old bazaar district developed during the Dutch period. The National Museum of Colombo, in the Cinnamon Gardens neighbourhood, holds the largest museum collection in Sri Lanka.
A city tour typically covers Galle Face Green (a historic coastal promenade first laid out in the colonial era), the Fort district including the Old Parliament building and the original lighthouse, the Pettah markets, Gangaramaya Temple (a significant Buddhist complex incorporating Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian, and Chinese architectural elements), Independence Memorial Hall, and the Beira Lake precinct. Colombo has undergone extensive redevelopment since 2010, including the Port City Colombo â a land reclamation project creating a new financial district off the western seafront â and the Lotus Tower, completed in 2019 and at 356 metres the tallest structure in Sri Lanka.
