Ayurveda, the traditional system of medicine originating on the Indian subcontinent over approximately 3,000 years, has been practised in Sri Lanka since ancient times under the local tradition known as Deshiya Chikitsa. The system combines herbal medicine, dietary guidelines, and a range of therapeutic treatments including oil massage (Abhyangam), herbal steam baths (Swedana), Shirodhara (continuous warm oil flow over the forehead), and Nasya (nasal cleansing). Sri Lanka’s Ayurveda practice is regulated by the Department of Ayurveda under the Ministry of Indigenous Medicine.

Ayurveda wellness resorts in Kandy offer residential programmes ranging from three-day introductory packages to three-week Panchakarma detox courses, each customised following a consultation with a qualified Ayurvedic physician. The Central Province setting provides proximity to Sri Lanka’s botanical wealth — the surrounding forests and gardens supply many of the medicinal plants used in traditional preparations. Day packages covering individual treatments are also available for short-stay visitors. Kandy’s established position as a tourism hub means that reputable, licensed Ayurvedic practitioners operate within and around the city.
