Arugam Bay, on Sri Lanka’s east coast in the Ampara District, is one of the top surf destinations in Asia and consistently features in international surfing media. The bay’s main break â Arugam Bay Point â produces right-hand point break waves reaching up to 3 metres during the prime surf season (May to October), when south-west monsoon swells travel up the east coast. The break suits intermediate to advanced surfers, while nearby Pottuvil Point, Whiskey Point, and Crocodile Rock offer a range of conditions from beginner-friendly to expert-level.
Surfing lessons and board rentals are available from operators along the main beach. Beginner lessons are typically held on the softer white water sections of the beach break, covering paddling, pop-up technique, and wave reading. Arugam Bay\’U surf season coincides with the clearest, driest weather on the east coast, and the town’s relaxed atmosphere has made it a natural hub for longer-stay travellers. Adjacent activities include yoga, Ayurvedic treatments, and wildlife excursions to Kumana National Park â an important bird sanctuary â located approximately 40 kilometres to the south.
