Arugam Bay on Sri Lanka’s east coast is one of Asia’s legendary surf destinations — a laid-back beach village with a world-class right-hand point break that draws experienced surfers from across the globe between May and October. But it is also an ideal place to learn, with several gentler beach break sections where beginners can stand up without having to negotiate the main point crowd.

Surfing schools and individual instructors based around the bay offer lessons for all levels, from total beginners taking their first wobbling stands to intermediate surfers looking to improve technique on steeper faces. Boards and rash guards are provided, and lessons typically last two hours. The east coast season runs from May through October when the south-west monsoon brings clean, consistent swell to the bay while the rest of the island’s west coast beaches are blown out. The off-season village transforms into a lively hub of warungs, cafés, and hammock bars, and the pace of life here is one of the most relaxed in Sri Lanka.
