The Madu River spreads across 915 hectares of protected mangrove lagoon near Balapitiya on Sri Lanka’s west coast, creating a labyrinth of waterways, islands, and tidal forest that is one of the island’s most tranquil natural environments. Hand-paddled timber canoes or motorised flat-bottom boats navigate the network of channels under a dense green canopy, passing mangrove roots thick with nesting herons, kingfishers, and crocodiles that bask motionless on exposed banks.

The tour typically visits a series of small islands within the lagoon: cinnamon islands where guides demonstrate the harvesting and processing of true Ceylon cinnamon; fish therapy stations where you can dip your feet in pools of doctor fish; and the remarkable Koth Duwa Temple, a Buddhist shrine accessible only by water, its gilded rooftop rising above the mangrove canopy. The Madu River supports 303 species of animals and over 60 species of mangrove plant. The best experience comes with a knowledgeable guide who can identify the endemic species that make their home in this protected ecosystem.
