The waters off Mirissa on Sri Lanka’s southern coast are among the best places on the planet to encounter blue whales — the largest creatures that have ever lived on Earth. From December through April, these magnificent animals move through the deep offshore waters in numbers that consistently astonish marine biologists, and half-day boat tours departing at dawn from Mirissa Harbour give you a genuine chance of watching them surface alongside your vessel.
Boats typically carry around fifteen passengers and are accompanied by experienced local naturalists who know the feeding patterns and movement corridors of the resident whale populations. Blue whales are the star attraction, but sperm whales, Bryde’s whales, and enormous pods of spinner dolphins — sometimes numbering in the hundreds — are encountered regularly. Dolphins often approach the bow in exuberant displays that seem designed entirely for the audience watching from the deck. Tours depart around 6:30am and return by early afternoon, leaving the rest of the day free for the beach.
