The Matale District is one of Sri Lanka’s most diverse agricultural zones, cultivating both export spices and a wide range of medicinal and culinary herbs used in Ayurvedic preparations. Alongside the globally traded crops of cinnamon, cardamom, clove, and pepper, the region produces turmeric, ginger, vanilla, pandan, lemongrass, goraka (Garcinia cambogia), and numerous plants with specific applications in traditional Sri Lankan medicine.
A spice and herb farming visit in Matale provides hands-on insight into the cultivation cycle of these crops from propagation through to harvest, processing, and packaging for export. The cinnamon production process is a particular focus: bark harvesting and the highly skilled quill-rolling technique â in which artisans peel the inner bark in thin strips and layer them into the hollow cylinders that form a cinnamon quill â have been transmitted within specialist communities for generations. Farm visits typically include the opportunity to purchase certified organic products directly from the producer.
