Negombo on Sri Lanka’s west coast 35 kilometres north of Colombo and 8 kilometres from Bandaranaike International Airport, is built around one of the largest lagoons in the country. The Negombo Lagoon covers approximately 3, 200 hectares and supports an extensive artisanal fishery. The lagoon’s network of channels includes sections of the Dutch Canal â a colonial-era waterway originally constructed in the 17th and 18th centuries to transport cinnamon from the interior to the port at Negombo.
A lagoon tour from Negombo covers the main lagoon by canoe, visiting the fishing communities on the lagoon’s islands, observing traditional coracle (thamara oru) fishermen, and passing through sections of the Dutch Canal lined with coconut palms and cinnamon gardens. The fish market at Negombo â is most vibrant in the early morning hours. The town also contains a Portuguese-era Catholic church, the ruins of a Dutch fort, and some of the oldest Christian communities in Sri Lanka, concentrated in the traditional fishing villages surrounding the lagoon.
