Minneriya National Park, in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, is best known for ‘The Gathering’ â one of the largest documented concentrations of Asian elephants anywhere in the world. Between August and October each year, as seasonal water sources across the surrounding dry zone forests recede, hundreds of elephants converge on the grass exposed by the falling water level of the Minneriya Reservoir. Peak counts have recorded over 300 elephants at the tank simultaneously, making this a wildlife spectacle without parallel in Asia.
Jeep safaris into Minneriya operate year-round, with August and September delivering the most dramatic gatherings. The park also supports populations of toque monkeys, sambar deer, spotted deer, and purple-faced langurs, along with a rich community of waterbirds on the ancient tank. The Minneriya Tank itself was constructed in the 3rd century CE by King Mahasen and remains a functioning irrigation reservoir. Minneriya, Kaudulla, and Giritale tanks together form the Elephants Corridor, a protected wildlife passage across the North Central Province.
